Pick a location you can supervise

Choose a secure part of the garden away from fences, cables, pipes and delicate plants. A broad shallow digging area should be easy to enter and leave, with no sharp edging. Use suitable clean non-toxic material and inspect it for debris. Avoid materials your dog is likely to eat. If using a container, ensure it stays stable and has no exposed fastenings or chewable lining. Consider drainage and how you will keep the area clean between sessions.

Make the allowed area worth investigating

Let your dog approach without placing them inside. You can partly hide a familiar safe toy near the surface and allow them to uncover it. Begin with an obvious find rather than a deep excavation. Praise or join the game in a way the dog enjoys. Do not bury tiny objects or edible items that encourage swallowing sand. Some dogs enjoy digging without hidden rewards, so observe their choice before adding unnecessary complexity.

Protect the places that are unavailable

Use suitable physical boundaries around planted beds while your dog learns where the digging opportunity is. If they begin elsewhere, calmly invite them toward the prepared area and reward interest there. Punishing after discovering a hole does not explain the alternative. Supervision helps you intervene before a new habit develops beside a fence or shrub. A designated pit is an option, not a promise that every other patch of earth will immediately lose its appeal.

Notice when the pattern changes

Digging can have different contexts, including exploration or attempts to reach something beyond a boundary. Check what is happening rather than assuming every hole has the same cause. Persistent frantic digging, difficulty interrupting or a sudden change deserves discussion with your vet and appropriate behavior support. End ordinary sessions before the dog becomes uncomfortable and check paws and equipment as needed. Cover or otherwise protect the area when unused if wildlife or neighborhood animals could contaminate it.
